Skypephone on 3 - Lividity

Having only just bought a Chinese phone off eBay, I was still tempted into also purchasing the newly released 3 Skypephone. I must admit, I do like it ... a lot. In fact I'm now looking at clearing out a fair number of my other phones by selling some of them off on eBay because I can hardly justify having this many.

Anyway, back to the phone. It's manufactured by Amoi (apparently, specifically for the 3/Skype collaboration, but looks similar to the WMA8703 without the HSDPA) and the build quality is excellent. The unit is compact but packs a lot into it. As usual for a modern phone, it has the normal applications you would expect (media player, reasonable phone camera, mobile web access, etc) but also, being a 3 phone, it is a 3G device (via its WCDMA hardware) therefore access to Planet3 and external websites is fairly fast (signal strength permitting). The Skype functionality is very intuitive and calls are of good quality (via normal calls to the Skype gateway at 3, so not true VoIP), although the downside here is no availability of SkypeIn and SkypeOut (it was to be expected really). GoogleMail and Opera Mini applications installed with no problems which pleased me no end and proves that java seems solid on this platform too. As I've mentioned already, there's no HSDPA or SkypeIn and SkypeOut but if it did possess them I think I'd be convinced into dumping all my other phones, we'll have to see if this is in the pipeline for future offerings from 3.

All in all, it's a very nice phone.
